A storytelling project using photography, podcasting, and community events to amplify the voices of LGBTQ+ individuals in slum communities.
01 Visual Storytelling
A collaborative visual art series was at the heart of the Queers in the Slums project. The body of work included photography exhibitions that captured the lives, struggles, and resilience of queer individuals living in the slums. The visual narratives were designed to be evocative and powerful, challenging viewers to reconsider their assumptions about queerness in Africa.
02 Oral Storytelling
The project featured the launch of the Queers in the Slums podcast, which aims to provide a platform for authentic voices and stories from members of the LGBTQ+ community. The podcast will explore various themes, including identity, community, and resilience, offering listeners a deeper understanding of the experiences and challenges queer individuals living in slums face.
03 Community Event
The Queers in the Slums project was showcased on March 29, 2025, at an immersive community event featuring high-energy DJ performances that celebrated queer excellence and provided safe spaces for community connections. The event was designed to foster a sense of community and solidarity among LGBTQ+ individuals, while engaging the broader public in conversations about inclusivity and acceptance.
04 Pride Anthology Contribution
As part of our commitment to storytelling and visibility, Wanjiku Talks Queer participated in the Pride Anthology, contributing to a collective archive of queer voices. This work highlights the importance of documenting LGBTQ+ experiences and preserving stories that are often overlooked or erased.
